Technical Data and Specifications

A pilot system designed by MemPro Ceramics Corporation is summarized in this document including a general P&ID and system specifications. The pilot system is a filtration apparatus that utilizes ceramic filtration elements produced by MemPro Ceramics. The general concept of the pilot system is a simple feed and recirculation system that utilizes a high-pressure, low-flow feed pump to pressurize the system and a low-pressure, high flow recirculation pump to provide cross-flow velocity during filtration.

Assemblage

All pilot system components are skid mounted into one mobile unit utilizing a support structure and electrical enclosure. The system is mounted on large castor wheels (locking) for ease of mobility.

Operating Environment

The pilot system can be used within facilities and areas where dilute petroleum based fluids, acids, bases, and other solvents are present.

General

Base materials for construction include 316L SS, Viton seals and gaskets, and ceramics. The system can operated at temperatures up to 200 °F. The system is automated with data acquisition and monitoring of flow rates, pressures, and fluid temperature. All valves are manual except for the Back Pulsing system. The system is designed to automatically fill the system feed tank with unfiltered solution during operation. If needed, the system can also operate in a batch mode. The system can be operated either with a continuous or intermittent “bleed” from the recirculation loop. Both permeate and retentate can be recycled back to the system feed tank depending on testing objectives. The system is designed so that all operational configurations can be tested.

System operation is monitored by field-mounted instruments that continuously monitor and record inlet pressure, outlet pressure, permeate pressure, feed flow, recirculation flow, permeate flow, bleed flow rate, inlet pressure, discharge pressure, and permeate pressure. The system feed tank is jacketed for either cold water cooling or steam heating. A tube-and-shell heat exchanger is placed within the recirculation loop to provide either heating or cooling (necessary to maintain constant temp in loop due to pumping energy). An immersion tank heater is used to heat chemical cleaning solutions during CIP operations.

The system also incorporates flux reversal technology into the design specifically utilizing high-frequency backpulsing (HFBP). The pilot system utilizes MemPro’s Back Pulse system that automatically controls the backpulsing operation with a frequency as high as once every 15 seconds. Backpulsing has shown to be very effective in most filtration applications.
